I don't remember where I heard it, but a number of years ago I heard something along the lines of "Never say goodbye, always say 'see you later'". The idea behind this is that "goodbye" seems very final, whereas "see you later" leaves room for getting together again. This has been my philosophy on goodbyes ever since.
